The Aviatrix. Helen/Amelia Earhart, NC-17. [info]geonncannon always has a delicate touch with femslash, and it's evident here. And just when I thought I knew what to expect from the story, it took a fabulous twist.

So all those stereotypes...aren't. )

Now that Fringe has moved to Vancouver, every episode is like the Stargate Guest Actor Reunion! I'm especially excited to see that JR Bourne will be on the show soon. (They should cast Chris Olivero from Kyle XY to play the younger version of him, or his son.)

This SGU Kino featurette refers to the episode Time. It's fascinatingly meta, especially toward the end. I strongly suggest you watch the episode before watching this, if you haven't seen the episode yet.

After Ellen has a great interview with Ming-Na about her character Camille Wray and upcoming episodes of Stargate Universe (including this week's, which is apparently a very Camille-focused episode).

ETA: Here's another great interview with her from Huffington Post!

I was a week behind on Sanctuary, so I managed to watch two similarly-themed episodes in one week!

Sanctuary - Pavor Nocturnus - what a way to start an episode! )

SGU - Time - what a way to end an episode! )

My story One Dimension Removed was just nominated for the Words on the Wind awards! Thank you to whoever nominated my story. I feel honored!

My mom is visiting. Tonight we watched SGU and White Collar, because watching TV shows we both like is a good way to keep from killing each other. (Murder would distract from the pretty.)

SGU )

White Collar )

I have made it through another day, and neither my mom nor I are dead. I consider that a win. We'll see if one of us shoves the other off a cliff tomorrow.

Current Mood: tired tired

[info]merrykk found a BSG show bible from 2003. The thing most notable for me was that Lee was supposed to wind up romantically attached to Laura.

This kills me. KILLS me. In the pilot and the first couple of episodes, I swear I saw the chemistry there and it was the thing I was MOST excited for on the show. We see older man/younger woman relationships a lot, but rarely the converse. I truly wish they'd gone down this path.

Quality of Memory by Dossier. I'm not interested in robot fic, and I'm not interested in Cam/John fic, and yet I devoured this whole darn story in one sitting. And it's not a short story, either - it's a novella! Dossier creates a fascinating future world that I would love to see more of, featuring a robot that accidentally becomes sentient, tender relationships, a mysterious plot, grave danger, and more.

The advantage to doing a detailed outline of your story is that you can learn that the introductory 20 pages bog down the story and should just be jettisoned BEFORE you write them, instead of after.

Of course, since I've already written a chunk of this story, I've probably written five of those 20 pages. But still! Yay for figuring out it doesn't move the story forward now instead of later!

For all the writers out there, I strongly recommend The Snowflake Method. Once you're getting into novel-length stuff, it REALLY makes the writing part easier. It shifts all the "oh crap, what happens NOW?" and "how do I get from here to the end of the next chapter?" stuff over to the outlining part, which makes it less likely that you'll have to throw out 1/3 of your story and rewrite it.

The good: I've figured out what Teal'c's plot is! And he's got a REALLY awesome plot all his own. It's not awesomer than Sha're's plot, but it comes damn close. Now I need to up the awesome in Sam's plot, and give Jack more of a plot arc, because right now his plot arc is mostly internal angst, and that's just not enough.

ETA: EEEE! Just figured out an actual PLOT for Jack as well as a character arc. This is going to be challenging, because Jack is going to be confronted with something that he was never confronted with on the show. And I'm going to be confronted with writing something that I'm not entirely sure I can execute well. This is going to be fun, where "fun" is defined as "making me curl up in a corner rocking and crying." Still need to up the awesome of Sam's plot, and give Janet something to do beyond "sassy best friend."

The bad: I am going to have to seriously, SERIOUSLY sit down and work out a detailed outline, or this thing is going to turn into a gigantic crazily multi-threaded story that makes the first Kushiel's Dart trilogy look small by comparison.

The advice: So I've never posted to a fic archive except for Wraithbait. Anyone have a recommendation as to the archives to which I should post One Dimension Removed?

Boy, Will is totally Dr. jackson Jr., isn't he?

and Kate is totally Vala.

And that plot was oddly like SGU.

and yet...it was still a lot of fun!

Cut for the uber-spoilerphobic )

I enjoyed this week's episode even more than the ones before, and it totally solidified that my favorite characters are TJ, Greer and Lisa Park. LOVE THEM!!!

So, recently I've been re-reading my old story Diving to Drown (mostly to be sure I haven't Jossed myself with the new Sha're SG-1 AU), and then tonight because someone commented on it on Wraithbait I reread my old SGA story The Silent Art of Watching. (Er. By the way, if you are hesitant to read things that are either smutty or dark, don't read those.)

And I realized...jeez, in a lot of ways, these two are the same story. It's not just that they're written in the present tense; the themes of the two are largely similar. (The themes say something interesting about where I was in life at that point, really.) And there are lines, like:

Contains spoilers )

Terribly fun, and full of the pretty. It's definitely going to be on our "watch the week it airs" list rather than the "watch when we get around to it" list. (It helps that it's on Fridays - Saturdays and Sundays I can sleep in, and Mondays Raindoggy doesn't have rehearsal, so those are our TV-watchin' nights.)

Although in my head, I keep casting Sean Maher as the thief and Michael Shanks as the FBI agent. (No complaints about the casting - that's just what happens in my head.)

NOTE: I cannot promise "no spoilers" in comments.

SGU: I never thought I would say this about a Stargate show...but I think I'm at my limit of character moments for a little while! It's funny - it's like they've done all the moments we always wrote fic for.

Sanctuary: Helen/Will is one of my OTPs. John/Helen is the other. (My partner Raindoggy's OTP is Ashley/Raindoggy.) Still enjoying the heck out of this.

Ascend the Brightest Heaven of Invention by [info]scrollgirl. It's an SGA AU in which, instead of Rodney and Carson going to Atlantis, it's Jeannie McKay and Carolyn Lam. (And a whole lot of other women, besides!) The thing that struck me most about this AU is that women dominate it like men dominate...well, most science fiction shows. It's interesting to see the ratio get flipped.

Dunno if they'll address it in the show, but one of the Kino featurettes sure as heck does. It's titled "Don't Encourage Him." (Some of them are interesting.)

I'm a sucker for really good Stargate gen fics, and this week I really needed to laugh. These two stories both crossed my flist, and both of them made me laugh out loud!

First is Stockholm Syndrome by [info]annerbhp, in which Sam and Jack are captured by the WORST BAD GUYS EVER. It takes place earlyish in Season 1, and it's just HILARIOUS. The team is still learning about each other...and while Jack and Daniel have each other's numbers, they haven't quite figured out Sam yet.

The next is Team Spirit, a gen SGA story by [info]penknife, in which Rodney is the only one who has a bathtub (and everyone wants it). This takes place in mid-season 4, and it's good not just for the laugh lines (of which there are many), but also because of the way the underlying plot is driven. Teyla's on maternity leave, and thus she doesn't appear in the story until late in the game - but her absence is very important to the plot.
